Being Obese or Overweight Can Cause High Medical Risks

    New Year's Resolution

    — michael fowler January 26, 2010 @ 10:48 am

Being obese or just overweight can be a factor into having a lot of medical problems. Besides the fact that being obese/overweight is uncomfortable, everyone who has excess weight is at risk for possible health problems, even if they are just 11 to 18 lbs over. Individuals that are obese/overweight run the risk to possibly have high cholesterol, coronary heart disease, type two diabetes, stoke, high blood pressure, and some types of cancer, such as colon, gall bladder, kidney, and post menstrual breast cancer. Often when people eat too many calories it will raise their blood cholesterol level, which in turn can cause heart disease. That is why keeping up with the level of your cholesterol is very important.

    - People who are obese/overweight can run the risk of having high cholesterol and high triglyceride levels. HDL “good” cholesterol is connected with lower heart disease and the risk of a stroke.

-People who have high cholesterol run the risk of atherosclerosis, which is, the buildup of fatty substances, cholesterol, cellular waste products, calcium and other substances inside the inner lining of an artery. This is also known as plaque.

-Unstable plaque can cause a rupture. If there is a rupture, it will cause a blood clot that will block the flow of blood through the artery. If the plaque blocks the flow of blood to the heart, it will cause a heart attack. If the plaque blocks the flow of blood to the brain, it will cause a stroke. If there is a block of blood flow to the arms and legs, it will make it difficult to walk and can eventually cause gangrene.

-If the blood flow is blocked to the smaller arteries, it will cause them to expand which. Which will effect the blood pressure.

Childhood obesity has also become a fairly common problem. According to the Michigan University Health System, 2003-2004, there were 17.1% of children ages 2-9 who were obese. (This number calculates that over 12 and a half million of young people.) Of the adults, there were 32.2% of adults that were obese, showing a staggering number of over 66 million. 5% of those men and women were extremely obese. Children who are obese in their teenage years or younger, runs a greater risk of being an obese adult. This also stems into many, many health problems. Those risks include, high blood pressure, heart disease, gout, Type 2 diabetes, pulmonary problems, gall bladder disease, liver disease, psychosocial problems, reproductive problems and some types of cancer.

According to statistics provided by the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) about 12,000 deaths are contributed to obesity/overweight in the US in each year.

Those who run the risk of being considered obese, whether an adult or child, needs to be under a doctors care. Monitoring for and watching for any of the possible health risks that obesity can cause is extremely important. You and your children as well as any of your other family’s future, depends upon it.

Taking An Early Pregnancy Test: Hpts Or Blood Test?

    Pregnancy

Expecting moms get very anxious the moment that they start to feel a possible pregnancy. Once they miss their period, they get very excited and curious whether they are pregnant or not. And thus, they would head off to the nearest pharmacy or convenient store to purchase a home pregnancy kit. An early pregnancy test may help you confirm whether you are pregnant or not. But is an early pregnancy test accurate? When should you take your first pregnancy test?

Whether or not you are expecting, you want an instant confirmation to put closure to your hopes or paranoia. But when is the perfect time to take the test? First and foremost, note that the earliest moment to take a test is not really established and general because women’s systems behave differently from one another. Home pregnancy tests work by detecting the presence and the level of hCG which is a hormone evident during pregnancy. This hormone appears in the urine and is produced by the placenta after a fertilized egg is implanted in the uterus wall. This phenomenon is said to occur at least 6 days after ovulation. This simply entails that taking a home pregnancy test before the sixth day will only give you an inaccurate result.

Given this, we can conclude that, pregnancy tests administered through pregnancy kits will not give you an accurate result especially if used prior to the 6th day after ovulation. Note; however, that since our bodies function differently, this may not necessarily apply to all women. Some women may still get an accurate result despite taking the test within the first six days after ovulation. If you really want to get rid of false alarms, it is advised that you go to your doctor instead of administering a home pregnancy test by yourself. Once you start feeling some early signs of pregnancy, your doctor will conduct a pregnancy test using your blood as specimen. Blood pregnancy test is more accurate than a urine pregnancy test and can detect pregnancy as early as the second week of conception.

Nevertheless, if you still want to go on with your home pregnancy test, wait until your period is due. Most doctors and even pregnancy kit manufacturers recommend that women take their first pregnancy test by the time that their period is expected. Somehow, this can give you a more accurate result. If you’re not yet satisfied with the outcome of your pregnancy kits, you can see your doctor for the blood test as a second confirmation. The entire home pregnancy test process is very simple but be sure as well to read the instructions indicated in your kits. Pregnancy kits have different indicators of positive pregnancy. Some use lines. Others use a plus. Using your first urine early in the morning as specimen is also recommended. The first urine contains a large amount of hormones which can help detect pregnancy.

Whether or not you’ve been trying to have a baby, the feeling pregnant blues always bring in dilemma so get your confirmation by conducting your first pregnancy test.

Prevent a Problem before it Starts by Knowing your Cholesterol Levels

    New Year's Resolution

    — Tags: , , — michael fowler January 19, 2010 @ 10:41 am

Cholesterol is not a bad substance. There are beneficial forms of cholesterol that are necessary for a healthy body. But for the most part, the cholesterol that people come into regular contact with through the foods that they eat is the bad kind. This kind of cholesterol clogs your arteries and can lead to a heart attack. It also drains your energy by making your body work harder to pump blood around your body. There are many other risk factors that can come from high cholesterol but the major result is a higher probability of heart attack. But there are ways to lower your bad cholesterol levels and stay on top of your exposure to it. Three of the most beneficial ways to do this is to develop a healthy diet, exercise on a regular basis and to go to a doctor regularly.

What ever food you ingest is part of your diet. Even if you only eat cakes and sweets once every two months, that small addition factors into your total diet. So what foods are you eating on a regular basis? Are most of your meals ordered from fast food chains, slathered together with artificial components and washed down with carbonated sugar water? Or are you deep frying more then anything else? Is grease a corner stone of your diet? Even seemingly healthy foods can be harmful in large quantities, such as cereals and dairy. Ok, so we have gone over some of the things that are bad for you now we move on to what’s good. You can, for the most part, eat whatever you want. The very big but to that rule is that you have to do so in moderation and that is where most people fail. Having a cheese steak with fried onions, bell peppers and extra cheese whiz is okay to eat on occasion but if this turns into your regular Friday meal after work then you’re going to have problems. One thing to always remember is this: Variety is your friend. If one day you go all out and eat deep fried onion rings with a side of bacon-ranch dip, followed by five baked potatoes with every condiment and side you can get your hands on and end your night off with a quadruple scoop sundae maybe next time you eat you should go for a veggie burger with a side of celery sticks and a bottle of water. The second meal may not be a tasty as the first but it will give your body time to recover and will balance out the high fat and cholesterol content of your previous meal. It will also give your body more time to digest the heavier food that was in the first meal.

But even if you have a well balanced diet, you still need to have a regular exercise routine. With regular exercise you can boost your metabolism and get your body burning off calories that would otherwise turn to fat. As far as what exercises you do, that depends on what your goals are. If you just want to improve your general health a fifteen minute cardio workout every other day will get the job done. Anything beyond that is up to the individual. And it can not be stressed enough that it is important to maintain a regular workout schedule so that you body can adjust to the stress and begin to muscle tone from it.
And last on the list for healthy cholesterol levels are regular doctor’s visits. One reason this is important is that a doctor can perform a test to determine where your cholesterol is at and what your health risk are. Also the doctor can give you advice on what exercises are good for you and how frequently you should be doing them for your specific body type and goals. Also it’s a general good idea to go in for regular checkups so that you can get screened for any possible illnesses and diseases that you may not be aware of. By following these steps you have a better chance of controlling your health and keeping your bad cholesterol down.
